News Zealand Over The Horizon

TLDR & TLDL: Most Fridays I take a hoon (the plural for Kākā) around the main news of the week, both overseas and here in Aotearoa-NZ with Peter Bale. He’s a former colleague from my days at Reuters and FTMarketWatch in London and is a very astute observer of global events, having worked as an editor at Reuters, CNN and The Times.

Peter also produces the Weekly World Bulletin email for The Spinoff, which you can sign up to here. It forms the basis for our chats and is a really useful way to catch up on geo-politics from down here on our three islands. Peter is usually based in London and Spain, but is now in Auckland, having been caught here during the first lockdown last year.

Any subscriber of The Kākā is welcome to join us on the zoom webinar we record this on. I send out the invite on Friday afternoon. We had nearly 30 attendees this week, who asked various questions about Afghanistan, the Reserve Bank, migration and housing.

This week:

  • we took a deeper dive into how the US exit from Kabul changes our geo-politics,

  • we looked at how long we could or should keep our Covid elimination strategy,

  • we talked about what the RBNZ's non-hike this week means, and, finally,

  • we discussed the legacy of Sir Michael Cullen.

Enjoy and we welcome your comments and feedback below. Please join us again next week.

PS: Here’s the link I mentioned to Kathryn Ryan’s interview with Sir Michael Cullen in late June.
