Dawn Chorus for Monday May 2

Sea levels rising twice as fast in Aotearoa-NZ as previously forecast; EU closing in on full Russian oil ban; Stocks slump ahead of big Fed hike, so Buffett buys big; Shelley Bay occupation ends

TLDR: Local research unveiled this morning shows some parts of Aotearoa-NZ’s coastline will experience sea level rises that are twice as fast as previous forecasts, in part because of land subsidence as much as rising seas. Other areas are seeing land uplift keeping up with rising sea levels.

Global sea-level rise of 25-30 cm by 2060 is baked in and unavoidable, and for many of our most populated regions this unavoidable rise is happening faster than previously thought. Photo by Ray Harrington on Unsplash

Elsewhere in the news here and overseas this morning:

  • The European Union, including Germany, is set to agree within days a much wider and tougher ban on Russian oil imports by the end of the year, which would add upward pressure on global oil prices;

  • fresh Corrections prison population figures show Māori make up 53.4% of the prison population, including Māori wahine making up 65% of the female prison population, despite a three-year $98m programme to reduce those shares; and,

  • Finance and Infrastructure Minister Grant Robertson is due to introduce Aotearoa-NZ’s infrastructure strategy for the next 30 years at a Te Waihanga-InfraCom conference in Christchurch later this morning.

Paid subscribers can see more on the sea level news below the paywall fold. I’d also welcome comments and suggestions for questions for Grant Robertson, who is expected to introduce the Infrastructure Commission’s 30-year strategy later this morning.
