
TLDR: After months of defiance against the Government’s densification orders, Christchurch City Council has finally relented and agreed a denser housing plan, but it remains much-less-dense than required because of various down-zoning measures, including creating a new qualifying matter for ‘sunlight access’ to stop houses being built near opponents’ back yards.
The blow-back to the Goverment’s attempts to force councils to densify their district plans through the NPS-UD and MDRS (National Policy Statement on Urban Development and Medium Density Residential Standards) amendments to the RMA also appears to be brewing inside the National Party.
