TL;DR: Our debate about taxing wealth, especially capital gains on residential land, has seemed frozen in time since former PM Jacinda Ardern said in April 2019 she would never again propose a capital gains tax in her political lifetime.
But that may be about to change with the release next Wednesday of much better wealth data and a speech on wealth and income from Finance Minister Grant Robertson Revenue Minister David Parker, who has notably never repeated Ardern’s pledge. Labour’s tax and fiscal policies are expected to be released within the coming month or two around the May 18 Budget
