Dawn Chorus: Where's our climate emergency plan?

IEA proposes 10 point plan to slash oil usage 2.7m bbl/day; EU slashing Russian gas usage this year in crash-course shift to renewables; Temperature 40 degrees C above average on Antarctic ice sheet

TLDR & TLDL: Europe has embarked on a crash-course in oil and gas use reduction to wean itself off Russian fossil fuel supplies and accelerate its shift to zero carbon. This comes as extreme temperature rises hit both ice caps over the weekend and the International Energy Agency laid out a 10-point emergency plan to cut oil demand by 2.7m barrels a day.

So where is Aotearoa-NZ’s climate security emergency plan? The biggest moves so far have been a petrol price cut, which will increase demand for oil, and a welcome halving of bus and train fares. Paid subscribers can see more on this below the paywall fold and I welcome suggestions for further inquiry in the comments.

Elsewhere in the news this morning:

  • Fletcher Building and Countdown are forcing employees to use sick leave when isolating with Covid;

  • Ecan has started cancelling water use consents for dairy farm converters; and,

  • John Campbell may be moving on from Breakfast to a wider reporting job at TVNZ.

Coming up today, I’ll be covering the post-Cabinet news conference, were we expect to get more detail on how the current Covid restrictions will be relaxed. Later this week, Joe Biden is due to attend an emergency NATO summit in Brussels.
