Dawn Chorus: Water and power rejigs coming

Electricity Authority set to release proposals for wholesale market reform; Govt set to rejig Three Waters plan after council opposition, although a legislative over-ride is still likely
15

TLDR & TLDL: The electricity industry regulator and the Government are set to unveil big proposed changes to the wholesale market for power and the structure of councils water assets later this morning. They may involve breaking up some asset owners in electricity, but concentrating water assets into big new centrally-controlled authorities.

This morning the Electricity Authority will lay out its recommendations for wholesale market reform. Photo: Lynn Grieveson/TheKaka

Elsewhere in the political economy, vaccine mandates are being widened to almost a million of Aotearoa-NZ’s 2.3m workers, the Reserve Bank has unveiled a climate change strategy that may increase interest rates and insurance premia in the years to come, and Tesla’s Elon Musk is now worth more personally than ExxonMobil.

Coming up today, I’ll cover the EA’s electricity reform proposals, Nanaia Mahuta’s final plans for council water assets, and I’ll watch out for more news on a loosening of MIQ rules and plans for younger school age children.

The first four ‘TLDR’ paragraphs of all these articles are for both paid and free subscribers, with paid subscribers getting the post in full below the fold. Feel the FOMO? :) I’d love free subscribers to upgrade to paid to make my accountability and explanatory journalism on affordable housing, climate change and inequality financially viable)
