Dawn Chorus: Russia turns off taps

Gazprom will cut off gas supplies to NATO members Poland and Bulgaria tonight after they refused to pay in roubles; Kim Hill vs Christopher Luxon; Musk's interest bill > Twitter's earnings

TLDR: Russia announced overnight it would cut off gas supplies to NATO members Poland and Hungary Bulgaria tonight after they refused to pay in roubles. The move raises the stakes for the likes of Germany and other European nations who depend on Russian gas and either have already sent weapons to Ukraine or are considering it.

Poland, which has supplied shells and missiles to Ukraine, gets 50% of its gas from Russia. Bulgaria gets 90% of its gas from Russia, but has pledged not to give Ukraine weapons or allow weapons through its territory. Both border Ukraine. (Reuters) (corrected to Bulgaria from Hungary. This was my error and thanks to eagle-eyed readers or emailing me)

FYI I’ve included my more detailed analysis and reflections on David Parker’s big tax speech in today’s Dawn Chorus podcast for paid subscribers above. My earlier piece this morning covered the speech, the reaction and included an interview with Parker.
