Cabinet reportedly ready to scrap Covid traffic lights system completely when the current three-month order expires next week; Mask mandates would be left up to firms and hospitals
Beginning to regret what felt like a rational and responsible decision to retire to a city fringe apartment. Numerous handy bus routes pass near us, but the absence of commonsense protection against airborne infection on public transportis making me reluctant to venture beyond walking range. Masking is patchy, and the air in those tight spaces is wholly recirculated(!!) Caught a bus home yesterday to avoid a long uphill hike, and a passenger with a mask under their nose sneezed, coughed and sniffled incessantly, then covered their nose properly - as they got off. This is normal. I suppose we older folk who use the buses mainly for recreational purposes can choose not to, at a cost to merely our well-being and connection. But what about the people who need them to get to shops, medical appointments, and work? Improving public transport air quality should be a basic, centrally funded public health measure in my book, not a business decision (Auckland Transport has dismissed itas too expensive). Am I being unreasonable, or just a bit naive here? In the tiny window before the next iteration of the rules, I wonder if we who are being told to exercise personal responsibility have any recourse for advocating protection against the irresponsibility of others?
Oh wow, I love how relaxed those elephants look. Makes me wish I got a sleep-in this morning. Not going to comment on the news, those elephants made me happy, and I am going to keep it that way!
Our business will continue to require a mask in the office. Being a small family owned business with customers who personally know us for years we should be OK. Also have a HEPA air purifier just to be on the safe side. And our employees are asked to stay home with every sniffle.
I will continue wearing a mask and avoid closed spaces including flying home to visit the family that is the hardest part for us, so thank you to all the selfish people who think volunerable people can simply protect themselves.
Go to
https://www.economist.com/graphic-detail/coronavirus-excess-deaths-estimates
Scroll down to "Compare excess deaths across countries"
And select Australia and New Zealand Cumulative per 100,000
As of the 6th of September 2022,
Number of excess death per 100,000 in Australia 73 to New Zealand -6. Yes New Zealand is just still a negative number...
Selecting "total" instead of "per 100,000"
450 more people are actually alive in New Zealand,
19,000 more people are actually dead in Australia, in comparison to non-COVID years.
That's the cost of Australia's Lackluster Masking.
New Zealand should not make the same mistake.

Wear a mask correctly where appropriate.
