TLDR & TLDL: Cabinet will this afternoon consider moving all or parts of the country from the ‘red’ setting of Covid restrictions to ‘orange’, which would allow unlimited indoor gatherings. (Stuff, NZ Herald)
Elsewhere in the news, China’s Covid situation worsened overnight as all of Shanghai’s 26m residents were told to stay home for two more tests, while the war in Ukraine worsened with the revelations of evidence of war crimes by Russian troops and a Ukrainian strike across the border into Russia.
For paid subscribers, I’ll be covering this afternoon’s post-Cabinet news conference and will put out a brief Dusk Chorus afterwards. Today, I’m working on a column on how feedback loops from the housing market could allow the Reserve Bank to avoid rate hikes much beyond 2.6%, not the 3.6% the bank itself and others are predicting. I welcome suggestions for lines of inquiry in the comments below.
