For the press conference today:

• The decision to cancel Mill Road could be interpreted as a sign that the government is veering away from carbon intensive suburban development. What are they doing to spur infill development? Why stop new development because they don't like its form if they don't have a plan to support the alternatives?

Background:

• the NPS-UD doesn't really kick in until 2024 (and Jacinda Ardern previously was caught out not knowing this by Henry Cooke): https://twitter.com/henrycooke/status/1382414531083653121?s=19)

• in the thread above the government in April let slip it was considering legislation similar to Christchurch but I worked on that bill and it was a bureaucratic mess that still took 18 months to make changes to planning documents - by that time the NPS-UD will be kicking in anyway - its not a short term solution. Which begs the question why don't they pull forward the NPS-UD timeframes, or what other alternatives are they dmcknsidering that will actually have an impact?
