In which I chat with Dr Gary Payinda about whether this week’s change of Health minister from Shane Reti to Simeon Brown can turn around decades of underfunding in real & per-capita terms
Excellent interview with Dr Paypnda and he is quite correct. He summarises what I know from experience as an NZRN employed in the State Sector for 40 years. Difficult to explain this to most people but Dr. Payinda does it well.
Brilliantly clear and to the point. It just frustrates me that this understanding of the direction of public health in NZ isn’t out in the mainstream. The assets and resources of the country are being stolen from under the public’s noses.
Kia ora Bernard - brilliant interview! I was impressed by this Dr when he was on the Hoon last year. Another really clear laying out of the problem. If it is possible to make this free and send it far and wide, please do so!
This man is a legend! How come the Labour, Greens and Maori parties are not using his writings and quoted statistics to challenge the government daily in parliament?
Excited to see these pop-up videos!
But only able to be viewed on mobile devices it would seem. Unable to load 'apps' on PCs/laptops. Can this be remedied?

Yes we do need to get it out there!
Make a great Herald weekender.

A stellar interview and the Bio of Gary Payinda is inspiring.
It is refreshing to hear fearless honesty but depressing to realise how colossal the job is and
the genuine reluctance to change the mindset.Agree with Francisco he is a resource to be used as was Ayesha Verrall
AN FYI comment, not a whinge - the live stream seems to only be accessible via the app, not via the substack web site.
Great comment!
As a former Nurse Manager of an Orthopaedic Ward, Gary is absolutely right in the way the private/ public interface.
A heart attack, an illness, private does not want to know! Because cost analysis does not work with that kind of care.
We will ALWAYS need our public health system, a jewell in our Crown.
