We're spreading The Kākā's wings and are delighted to announce Cathrine Dyer has joined us as a correspondent to write and podcast about climate, housing and poverty issues.
Kia ora Catherine, I would like to understand your take on food waste in our country & AFRA’s manifesto that are calling for mandatory food waste or loss reporting from our supermarkets & a Nation Food Plan. I work for a Food Rescue NGO & we have never seen such need. AFRA is Aotearoa Food Rescue Alliance.
This is a great subject for discussion! The latest IPCC mitigation report had a strong focus on 'demand-side' strategies (ie reducing demand). Measuring food waste or loss would play right into that approach. I would love to see more focus on demand-side strategies in Aotearoa..
A very welcome addition to The Kākā and maybe, with additional full subscribers, a foreshadowing of the creation of a larger team, existing "co-hosts" of the Hoon notwithstanding?
I am thinking about the time I had to pick up 1000 bananas (sent all the way from the Americas) and managed to distribute them to the community but had to compost 80 and how food waste contributes to carbon emissions, particularly on an island. We food rescue lot who are part of the AFRA alliance have been measuring our food rescue hauls for quite some time and it's extremely interesting. AFRA are also asking the public to sign up to our Nourishing Aotearoa vision for a sustainable Food Future for us of all and given all the food insecurity out there I think we need to rescue and save every edible morsel out there. I know there's that oft used phrase that we as a country can 'feed' 40 million but as someone said at the AFRA media conference that's not really true because a lot of exports consist of a milk powder product that is used for confectionary items. And sweets really are not so nourishing really.
Welcome, Cathrine. Do you know about these food rescue restaurants? https://everybodyeats.nz/our-restaurants The food is some of the best food I've eaten anywhere.
really appreciate your contributions Catherine! glad you've joined the team. i was an early subscriber, but part of what keeps me here is the sense-checking of political discussions against planetary boundaries, growth limits, and wellbeing. plus the pace of response required to proaticely address the big challenges we face.
Welcome 🙏
Excellent! Are you becoming a newspaper!?
Welcome Cathrine. 😊
Tēnā koe Catherine 🙏
