Bernard Hickey & Peter Bale discuss 2024 with Cathrine Dyer, Robert Patman, Helen Clark, Josie Pagani & Elaine Monaghan, including their people of the year, books of the year & predictions for 2025
Thanks so much for your superb journalism, Bernard, and the daily quality information available on the Kaka which you and Lynn produce day after day after day. Last night you looked tired, and I hope you take time to slow down and recharge your batteries. Arohanui Garry Moore from the Mainland
Another year of quality mahi Bernard, keep it up next year! Have a excellent and deserved yuletide and New Year break, Meri Kirihimete to you, Lynn and the entire Kaka/Hoon massive
Absolutely fantastic - many thanks. I need to set an alarm to watch, as inevitably I am all qued up and I miss the live show! Merry Xmas and wishing you and yours the best of holidays and 2025 xx
I've only recently stumbled across your substack and even just in these past two weeks I've learnt so much about NZ politics. Became a paid subscriber and looking forward to much much more of this! 😊
Enjoyed the wrap-up Hoon. Well done, Bernard and team.
I can endorse Cathrine's suggestion of Juice by Tim Winton as good, compulsive cli-fi reading. It's bleak at times, but finely illustrates some of the impacts of climate change and gives what I reckon might be a fair picture of future Australia...
Wonderful wrap up for the year! Bernard, as I understand it, this is your first Xmas after losing your mum. It will be a little harder. Remember and reminisce, then rejoice in a life given by others.
I agree with Helen Clark's sentiment / concern. "Show me your strategy"
Because of Peter's "Mike who" comment, my pick for book of the year for The Hoon: The fight for Fresh Water. Dr Mike Joy. A must read for all New Zealanders.

Samantha Harvey's Booker Prize winner Orbital would be my pick for Bernard and anyone else who feels they currently have a short attention span. Listened on Audible when I was deep in COVID brain fog - Orbital not only held my attention, it transported me. I enjoyed it just as much in paperback a month later - the second orbit - so to speak. 🌎
Yay! to community based journalism!!
Here, here! to shutting out extraneous noise and focusing on our local collective power.
102years 9months 11 days. Marvellous. 🫖
Ngā mihi nui, Bernard, Peter, Cathrine, Robert, researchers and tech wizards working behind the scenes, and guests. Wishing you all a safe and happy Christmas New year holiday period. 🥂

Thanks Bernard and guests,
A very interesting insight into the geopolitical pulse of the nation from an interesting group.
Happy holiday season to you and your guests.

Someone send Peter a copy of Joy's excellent book The Fight for Fresh Water. 🤦♀️
