I know you were speaking in jest right at the beginning but "over my dead body" should we be cuddling up to the US now. We may as well go direct to Mr Putin. They at least are honest and up front about being evil bastards. I much prefer the "cloak of invisibility" option you mooted.
On a slightly more serious note, given the looming instability of trade, could perhaps Australia and NZ be showing some gumption and hosting a trade conference with Canada, Mexico, the EU and UK? We are tiny, we need others, but we are unthreatening and have international credibility, we can act as an organizer and galvanizer.
We need to diversify our trade away from China. We need manufactured goods and tech. Everyone is going to need food, so we have something to bring to the table.
