I spoke last year to a brother of a good friend who has been retired for at least 10 years. He worked for Auckland Council planning and the last job he did was identifying all the areas in Auckland that would be at risk of flooding. He was saddened but what had happened in the storms last year.

Never underestimate the ability of property developers to railroad planning objections!

Every member of any Council Building Consents department should have to take a comulsory training Course on Hydrology where they learn that water flows downhill and ponds in the lowest places.

I think it's even simpler than that. Councils should be required to hire people who already have appropriate key competencies, and relevant expertise.

Our councils should not be run by, nor should our country's infrastructure be decided by generalists.

Don't criticize the council workers, we built a house 12 years ago and the overland flow analysis for the resource consent was incredibly cautious and our house is on top of a hill!

i just watched this short Guardian documentary https://www.theguardian.com/news/ng-interactive/2024/jan/31/rowdy-flock-a-daughter-her-dreams-and-a-sheep-farm-in-norway and the following comment from it gives me cause for thought. The young farmer says " The entire ecosystem is all about balance. Maybe that's what clashes with our Western capitalist way of thinking. It's just not compatible with the way nature works."
