Three new cases at Kaiaua endanger Auckland's expected drop from level 4 to level 3; One case was symptomatic in a north Waikato school last Thursday; Fresh MIQ slots opening up
I logged in to the shiny New Golden Kiwi MIQ Lottery this morning. I was allocated a place in the queue with 20,000 ahead of me. there were 3000 beds for 3 months. December is already filled. It would be interested to learn the highest number others have seen, or do we need an OIA request to find out the size of the backlog. I estimate that at this rate it will. be 5 years before I get to a 50% chance of coming home. Something has to change. we need to move to home isolation for those who are vaccinated, test negative, agree to isolation conditions and monitoring. Its the only way to get the flow going again. BYW I understand that we have statutory rights so we might see a class action soon.
Didn't they say that today's was all of September, most of october and just a little bit of the capacity for november and december? ie, there will be more lotteries with a lot more places in the coming months?
Answers to questions A.Continue to hide, build nuclear fallout shelters in the backyard. Our generation lived with the nuclear threat for long enough to know war is and always was in terms of modern warfare and what comes back at best,a no win scenario nuclear or not. So if any naughty boys anywhere (invariably men) suggest fighting anywhere they should be arrested and detained as enemies of humanity and their own people. Military are also the biggest polluters and misuser and abuse men of women, children and public resources in many places. Not a rational proposal. B.C and D Don’t know but I hear studies are ongoing and no doubt supplies will be adequate. Probably shouldn’t rely on this happening anytime soon to “open borders up”. I think they should get on with building what NZ needs and signal borders will not reopen soon to the extent we were used to so we can all relax at a lower level and exports productivity can remain. C & D No secure individuals income directly private business needs to take care of private business not rely on Corporate welfare. Securing personal incomes helps both business and the environment, individuals and families so is more effective use of resources. I also don’t think vaccines should be mandatory yet or incentivised unless travelling,as they always have been, on the basis we continue and improve MIQ and inbound travel checks once this outbreak is eliminated. There haven’t been vast numbers of breaching level conditions in NZ so their is still high tolerance in the public good I think. If we leave it to business to control the narrative we won’t hear much of this perspective though. The welfare, infrastructure and pro social stuff also needs doing anyway so Government should just get on with it. Summers coming! 😀
Regarding the China question, a scenario of the US and Australia defending Taiwan being attacked by China: New Zealand should join in, in whatever small capacity we can. Reason? When a rising power that has been flexing its muscle for some time, challenges the existing power protecting the status quo - history proves that this ends in serious war. Basically, Hong Kong has fallen to China, Taiwan would be the next domino. While NZ would be unlikely to be the third domino, it would certainly not benefit from WWIII. Our Trade Deal with China is important, in times of peace. It is irrelevant in time of war. Our forces are too depleted to become swept up in any war in the Pacific, without strong allies. China is not interested in diplomacy or kindness, at least not under the present leader.
Your comment is great. You say it simply, directly, factually, clearly, appropriately, data supported. How do you churn out such quality - I can't keep up! While you increase my knowledge, your docs also increase my frustration, despair and contempt. Decision makers are as venal, incompetent and sanz ethics & morality as ever. Just average people: well paid, well spoken, well dressed but shallow thinkers. I'm old, it's like watching history. Did South African apartheid start the same way as NZs is going?
Hi Bernard, love your daily news and just signed up for the year's subscription - it went through straight away (I have an existing Substack account) but at the annual rate of $190 and not the sweeter offer deal of $95 for the first year. Is the offer deal not being recognised? Cheers
Same problem here - I only have the option for $19 or $190 :( For 95 I'd jump for the whole year. (I didn't read enough of the email and I thought that WAS the discounted rate, so I'm on the 19 right now....)
I did try the link without being logged into Substack,. and it shows $95 as the discount, but if you already have an account and youre logged in, then yeah, doesn't work :(
I'd still like to come for dinner anyway, but I guess I'll just have to make do with your regular updates on here for the annual subscription ... lol. Best of luck with the pay-sub rollout.
Hi Bernard, I tried to subscribe to the $95 offer by inputting my credit card details and then clicking on the Subscribe button. It has been 5 minutes and nothing has happened. When I hover over the Subscribe button I get a round red circle with a red bar across the middle. It looks like the subscribe process has jammed.

I signed up, Bernard, thanks for the great discount. And I think that NZ should stay out of any and all wars. Peace.
Hi Bernard, I went to sign up for your special annual offer. It said $1900!! I was a bit scared to put that on my credit card.
