Authority finds a lack of competition led to $70m worth of electricity overcharging when Meridian spilled water; Greens want structural separation; Woods eyeing new 'tools' to help lower prices
Not just gentailers broken. Lines companies like Powerco are incentivised to maximise profit by applying for additional $$$ to replace infrastructure rather than address the changing landscape of renewable generation. Zero meaningful innovation in that space. And why are we not talking about the two existing hydro schemes that could be used for pumped hydro with costs in the hundreds of millions and coming online much faster than pumping billions into developing Onslow.
Thanks Dave. Agree on the lines companies. Certainly few incentives around to use solar much or to disconnect from the grid. Plenty of embedded status quo doing it's usual thing. I'm curious though about the 'two existing hydro schemes' to do what Onslow would do. Got more detail? Cheers Bernard
I have a friend who can provide more detail. I’m quoting from txt messages “original pre Maui design and build is Pukaki in to tekapo. Apparently much infrastructure in place for rotoairo in to Taupo. High head so much less water needed but small storage so need confidence that surplus wind and solar real regular to refill. Understand taupo likely to have big iwi challenges. Both are small lakes going in to big lakes so good oppo to recycle water rather than have massive store“
