Co-founder Hamish McKenzie explains how Substack's focus on subscriptions avoids the algorythmic reflexes of ad-driven social media to ramp up outrage, pile-ons and performative debates
I spoke with a friend travelling/house sitting/pet sitting in North Carolina and said this debate didn't come up at all in her circles. I was astounded that she didn't watch it, nor have it effect her travels.
Thank you Bernard for this fascinating interview. I knew little about the origins of sub-stack,and learned something new. I feel pretty proud of our Otago son who has put his kiwi stamp on such an innovative concept. We'll done Hamish.
Quite a few of us in NZ are indeed immersed in it (the US election) - simply because it's inherently fascinating and has huge implications for Aotearoa.
I too am immersed. Has heaps to do with us whether a wannabe dictator goes into the White House and hence gives more vigour to our lovely ACT and the rest of the world's dictators, or if a drive to maintain a democracy wins.
Plus its so good that a mixed race woman is so close to beating a very ugly American white man, that its a great show.
Loved this interview and better understanding the thinking behind Substack. Get the model right and better behaviour follows. Of course. Looking forward to our online offerings continuing to mature so that we can move off the old ads and data driven models.
What ‘sparkling’ minds you both are blessed with. Hamish such a decent soul, like yourself. Educated me on subtrack. I accidentally created my own when I first started then couldn’t find how to delete it even after contacting whoever. Maybe one day. It was a great debate, unhooked my crossed fingers and clapped Kamala as it progressed. Now need her to elaborate on those questions from the past governance period etc. I recall vividly on the occasion of the Hillary/Trump debate when she was asked various questions; private finance allegations and the computer fiasco she chose to say she had given deep explanation on her web site or the other. That wasn’t good enough. A few words in these cases can sweep them into the back-ground as Trump and Luxflakes do. Thanks again.
I thought that last comment was a very intelligent thing to say! I lived in America for seven years and have drawn all sorts of comparisons between America and New Zealand along similar lines, but I've never made that specific observation.
The rest of the interview was also very insightful. I'd heard about Substack's proposition before but it was nice hearing it explained by a co-founder. I don't think I had realised that Hamish was a Kiwi before the first ten seconds of this video!

C'mon Bernard

So far, this is a great discussion...
