That discipline may well happen. The EU has already launched plans for a carbon border tax that punishes imports generally from laggard countries. I agree the announcement had the feel of a 'dog ate my homework' about it.
Thanks Erina. I think you're right that the hesitancy might fade away in the edge. Ashley Bloomfield also says regularly the bigger issue is pure access, rather than unwillingness to get the vaccine. We'll see.
"No mention of ANZUS" .... Correct. NZ needs to wake up. Not everyone in this world is "kind" and Australia has long shouldered a burden of a complacent NZ wrt defence. Australia has an enormous unguarded coastline and submarines have long been considered the most effective approach to naval defence. The silent Nuke versions are the only choice they have to adequately achieve this task and the $90bn conventional strategy build by France was always a political compromise that would never have suited purpose. We in Aotearoa would be wise to listen to whats going on and wake up to where our interests lie.
Sadly inevitable especially with three degrees warning on its way. Defence will be needed as war will become inevitable rising tensions as well as heat if countries don’t pivot to prioritising the lives and well-being of their own people and given they’ve given vast amounts to a few deranged individuals and corporations it may, as China is seeing, find its battling them to protect people and the environment. Will be interesting to see if either UK or US can reign in their private and very profitable war machines. I hope we see a change of attitude and respect for borders. Economics might be key to bringing peace and prosperity so I hope they start focussing on that. UK is saying the right things but removing income from the poorest and most productive (reproductive?) this week so I’m not sure the penny has dropped there yet that getting money and resources to that sector not to the rich is the key. The slogans are right but they reduced company tax from 28 percent to 18 then crowed about raising it another 1 percent. So this is the sleight of hand they do. Labour there supported that reduction as well so there’s not many on the side of the people, environment or degrowth there seeing the writing on the wall sadly. China has one party but I fear we all do as well in real terms. I hope they don’t roll Judith as that will mean the complete implosion of any opposition here to although that is from an need for opposition which isn’t willing or able to be effective in any event atm as it’s quite rightly all hands to the pump action stations and all that and Judith isn’t a leader on that and Seymour is simply annoying about the Impracticalities of functioning we would face if sick and dying like flies with borders open vaccine or no and the mere suggestion is simply a thought experiment in reality. It’s great we all get our say though!

I guess to be fair - it is more about a construction contract for submarines. the French deal was always controversial and its replacement has long been flagged. Is there any threat of Australia having a nuke strike force? I suspect that is an option and a threat rather than a foregone conclusion. v unlikely
