I have witnessed how a controlling parent(s) and even children can influence access to general audience and grandchildren. In one occasion I observed the first thing one mother said to the 'other' mother do you own a house? ... no small talk just straight to the point to find if the possible future in-laws where worthy.
Another situation an older women provided a cheap rent for the mother of her grandkids in the front of her property to not only to have greater access by proximity and without saying keeping an eye on who was coming to the house aka new boyfriend. Yet had the key and felt entitled to enter and take photos of how the house was a tip while the mother was out. But wives are more often gatekeepers to the husband and grandchildren and if the arrangement falls in their favour that they are indeed a scared cow due to low sibling competition and competing Grandparents ... bring on the Granny wars as it was this mother who could not only milk babysitting at a whim from left and right score keep rent for a nice house while her own parents paid the utilities. The older women happened to be a HR and 'compliance' manager working beyond retirement who destroyed me I had to leave. Maybe I was a good listener, but anyone could read between the lines and revealed the one person who she couldn't control was the mother of her grandchildren. The women frankly reminded me of the sea witch Ursula in the Little Mermaid or the white cat on the fancy feast cat food tins.
Further what is the chance of elder abuse and expectation from the children that if the parents doesn't cough up their children will either become failed fledglings that won't or can't leave home to eventually overthrow a widow usually a women to sleep on the sofa or the elderly simply become estranged ... orphan older adult.
Also if one set of parents have money, differ culture or values in scenario of sons with good prospects but coming from poor or eccentric families could be shut out by wealthy daughter and her parent arrangements. They don't say the saying ... a son is a son until he takes a wife but a daughter is a daughter for life.
What happened to the days when kids knew better and would go off to tsk tsk their parents buy their first car with the mags and spoilers, go flatting to only return home with their tail between their legs after tricking and snagging a future spouse to selling off the souped up boy toy racer for cheap board, beer lifestyles for a few years of bottoms up heads down to scrap a deposit. There was a lot of virtue, dignity, character building with no handouts and strings attached to those days as coming from a large family as I did I saw many of my older siblings pass this passage of rite.
Oh by the way I feel importers will soon need to put up prices as they have been absorbing 4 to 6 times the cost and will need to recoup this somewhere ... surely. N.Z remoteness might as well be living the Greek Tragedy the river of pain and the contingency of more favourable markets for goods it won't be long before someone has to take the oar and pay Charon the ferryman.
