Concerning the governments budgetary position. I am minded of the saying: 'upon finding oneself in a hole...stop digging', or perhaps of a mediaeval doctor treating a patient with anaemia by blood-letting.

The proposed tolls for those three motorways are basically heavy vehicles pay twice what a light vehicle pays. This is a substantial cross-subsidy from light vehicles to heavy vehicles - not just directly because of the 4th power rule, but also because the roads being paid for are more expensive because of the need to build roads to a specification that caters for the extra-heavy vehicles category introduced by one Stephen Joyce.

Budget cuts, lack of spending, austerity leads to weaker less productive economy means more budget cuts, even less spending, heaps more austerity which will lead to a worse economy which will mean there will be even less spending and harsher austerity which will help the economy nose dive further which means that we are going to have to apply even more austerity . . .

Tolling Ō2NL will be devastating for the small, low-socioeconomic residents of both towns and the settlements between them. The current piece of SH1 between the two is deadly (15 fatalities/44 serious injuries, 2017-22), heavily used by HT, the speed limit is 80kph (on a state highway), and the road is in shocking condition. But residents travelling between the two will have no choice.

Surely, toll the entirety of new roading from Tawa to Levin, or none at all.

I hope more people will take notes of the successful campaign against tolling in Tararuas that forced Simeon Brown to back down on his tolling plan. The key to this is pressure on their elected MPs, which I would take a wild guess are mostly National MPs.

If that happens I wonder how they will spin it so it will be Labour's fault.

A friend who follows politics in the media fairly closely has complained to me on several occasions that he has seen no analysis of Labour's alleged mishandling of the economy as regularly claimed by the coalition. More illiteracy from the ‘data and evidence’ government. Electric heavy transport, and electric high grade heat, already exists including examples in NZ (Windrose E1400 and Fonterra Edendale Electrode Boiler). It’s not impossible hydrogen will help with niche cases and we certainly should be decarbonising current t industrial hydrogen use cases but other countries have gone down the hydrogen heavy transport and industry route, and it’s a dead end.

From the Hydrogen Strategy - “However, some parts of the economy are not practical or possible to electrify, such as heavy transport and industry – this is where hydrogen could take a major role in reducing emissions while keeping our economy growing.”
