What's news to me this morning

Realised tax-free capital gains from house sales hit record high $6.7b in Dec qtr, CoreLogic finds; Total gains since March-June lockdown $16.3b; Total gains since Labour elected $60.8b

TLDR: CoreLogic reported this morning that realised capital gains on house sales, which are not taxed, rose to a record-high $6.7b in the December quarter and have totalled $16.3b since the first lockdown started in March. Total tax-free gains since the 2017 election of Labour, which proposed a capital gains tax excluding the family home up until the last week of the campaign, were $60.8b. (Chart below)

Meanwhile, the first OneNews/Colmar Brunton poll of the year found Labour keeping its big lead over National, albeit with Labour dropping four points to 49% and National rising two points to 27%. The big change was in the preferred PM rating of Jacinda Ardern, which fell 15 points to 43%. Judith Collins fell four points to 8%.
