Appreciated the interview with Lucas. The top down changes, combined with the speed of change in education is shocking and the teaching profession should be allowed to lead that, and it shouldn't be politicized. That said, I am a supporter of the change to structured literacy approach and the removal of reading recovery programme which is not ok for dyslexic learners. Basically, we aren't investing enough in education, the educators, the teacher aids, and in my opinion there should be a professional social worker in every school so that teachers can teach and social workers can support social outcomes that improve learning. Invest more in social infrastructure would improve our overall capability in the future to have an awesome Aotearoa future.

It's concerning that teachers feel like they're being put in straitjackets. I hope that the Minister pays attention to this, because her rhetoric going into her reforms suggested that this wasn't her objective—though I think she underestimated the risks here.

But I also found it interesting that Lucas touched on the difficulties of working in MLEs (41:36), and then both he and Peter brushed right past how one of this Minister's high-profile interventions was to put an end to MLEs. I don't agree with everything Erica Stanford is doing. But if someone was looking for evidence that Lucas represents a "bunch of left outriders for the Labour Party" (43:45), this kind of omission points worryingly in that direction.

Smellie is the thinking man’s Fran O’Sullivan? He certainly does share her worldview I fear…

We don't have plans in any area to reduce costs, aren't we all about maximising profits for big business and our top 1-10%?

I'd be keen to know where this government is working to reduce costs.
