Do we maybe suspect that the US' action against the ICC is them getting in front of possible charges that may arise one day for actions in the middle East and in their ICE detention camps?
I know the US are not members of the court now, but its victims may well belong to countries that are. And a future administration, leading a weakened America, and seeking to repudiate the Trump period and its actions, may well join.
Nobody can be held to account at the Hague, if there is no court at the Hague to be sent to.
In any event, the very concept of power being held to account by the international community, is very inconvenient to those who will brook no let or hindrance to their ambitions.
Datagrid in southland at least signed up to a power purchase agreement (with mercury i think). And notably can vary its load because its a training centre. So its not quite as toxic as implied, though many of your other points are still true. if the upgrades to the grid are for their benefit it is likely they will have to pay for them directly rather than consumers.
It seems to me that the issue with our govts shackles keeps coming back to Treasury. It's not MMP and waiting until things are so terribly bad that we vote a Greens majority govt is something our environment will not handle. What we need is a cleanup of Treasury and that I think is something the Greens can negotiate with Labour.
