Crown accounts show $918 million of capital spending in Sept quarter, which was $267 million less than forecast & less than half the quarter's $2.1 billion of depreciation; Govt wage spend falls too
The famously "left wing" Herald devotes it's first three pages to the plight of Waiheke landowners and showcases some $22,000 art for the interest of the average kiwi
The idea that our media has a left wing bias is laughable when it’s almost impossible to find a mention of: climate change when the storms keep getting worse; Covid when more and more people are getting and staying sick; or genocide in a story about Gaza.
Troy, fascinating, thank you! The article makes it sound like they can 'just do this' no big deal. But it isn't they are going to have to put through legislation to do this, perhaps that is this years christmas surprise from them.
Edit:
Troy I have just been looking into this further, they will be putting 2 new bills through 1 to be passed before Christmas, under urgency (no public consultation) and the other soon after. Add this to the changes to the RMA post Christmas, the fast-track bill amendment that will be passed before Christmas, the RSB that again, will be passed before Christmas and the Government will be able to approve any project it likes without any consultation or any group being able to stop it. There is an outside chance that Iwi may be able to via the courts, however, this government has already made it clear it is not interested in anything that comes from the Waitangi Tribunal which means it would need to be something like a high court injunction - and this is on the way the RSB is written today - that could change between now and the time it is signed off.
I hope you and Bernard don't mind but I have written a deeper article on this and will be publishing tonight.
When this government says they are growing investment in infrastructure, they do not mean they are putting government money in.
They have just put before parliament a new bill amending the fast-track bill. The most notable thing in here is that they will be giving greater powers to the Ministers - you know, those Ministers' powers that were removed from the bill first time round due to public outcry?
If our government won't invest in NZ they why would the private sector do it? (unless it was an asset stripping, privatising profit/socialising losses type scheme).
The amendment to the fast-track bill is expected to be passed before Christmas, with the first of the replacement bills for the RMA to be introduced in January.
The only problem this government sees is that they are running behind schedule with the legislative changes they are making to allow this wholesale privatisation of profits/socialisation of losses programme to run before the next election.
Agree re the post, the new editor seems to have a made a difference I’ve noticed. Seriously thinking of cancelling subscription. It’s only the cartoons I would miss now. Don’t bother with the herald at all now
New Zealand is without question facing a come-to-Jesus moment. Hopefully, so too is its incompetent Prime Minister, although I think Jesus to him is as make believe as his notion of investing in the nation or keeping any of his pre-election promises. His report card would have a capital ‘F’ stamped on it in indelible ink using bolded type. The accompanying commentary would not be complimentary.
It is a Trumpian trait to now have their rich supporters buy up the news media. Perhaps the time is coming when there is a Govt Dept appointed to report on the news media and have them all ‘fact checked’

I’m puzzled by the relatively minor comment you’ve made indicating the Post didn’t report on the Deep Southing of the climate change response framework? You’ve seen this? https://www.thepost.co.nz/politics/360876015/government-loosens-range-climate-rules-pushing-out-target-public-sector-25-years
Thank you Troy

Do you have a link to your article Annie?
Thanks Troy. Henry did a good job, but for whatever reason, it was not mentioned in the physical paper, until deep in the business section. cheers
