I haven't heard much on this topic for years so asking if there's much of a republic movement in nz that was waiting for this news about HRM. Could be tempting as a nice distraction from all the real problems

"I know this is huge (if not unexpected) news, but you’ve no doubt seen it everywhere else already" - The Kaka was where I first heard it so while not unexpected it was a big surprise in that context! Nice to have the warning before I visited any MSM sites.

If our current King is Charles III , does this mean we get the Restoration II ?

What happened to the former leader of the UK parliament after the Restoration I ?

Bless Queenie. I prefer her and her family on the other side of the world to be our heads of state when the alternative could be a D Trump throwing his weight about here. No thanks . Apart from that, news of the rent freezes is interesting - as was the programme re Rotorua and housing. It has turned into a nightmare. No matter any lovely words from government, the reality of housing is way out of control. Why, why, why?

The North and South article made for depressing reading; neoliberalism is a WMD for social cohesion and justice.

Hi Bernard

A big thank you for the consistently high-value and incisive commentary.

Just a quick thought - I've noticed recently that in your assessment of events of the day, there's quite a strong tendency to map the situation onto your framework of wealth transfers to shareholders/property owners at the expense of certain demographics/future generations.

I do appreciate that perspective and the arguments are strong and convincing - particularly in New Zealand's political economy.

However, I wonder if there might sometimes be a risk of missing alternative interpretations that could provide an equally (if not more) satisfying assessment of current events, if it becomes too habitual.

Thanks again for the work you do and I'll continue to look forward to your newsletters and podcasts as always.

Cheers

Every adult in NZ should read the North and South article about housing. Please make this Dawn Chris available for everyone hopefully so they read this. Incredibly informative
