Tiwai Point stays open, delaying fair transition
Tiwai Point to stay open 20 more years, slowing shift to climate zero & making it more expensive for households; Port of Auckland to hike fees by 84%; Broken cancer drug promise is Budget's legacy
TL;DR: The Tiwai Point aluminium smelter, which consumes over 15% of the motu’s renewable electricity, has struck a deal to stay open for another 20 years. The Government’s inexplicable decision not to fund 13 cancer treatment drugs in Budget 2024 is its most politically disastrous broken promise so far.
In another sign the Government’s failure to fund councils properly is generating widespread domestic inflation that is holding mortgage rates higher for longer, the Port of Auckland is softening up customers for an 84% price hike.
