Ask Me Anything about the week to March 17
Paying subscribers can ask Bernard Hickey about the week’s news, including the Govt's policy bonfire blowing up the ETS, more bank dramas in the US & Europe, & Auckland's unnecessary austerity budget
It’s that time of the week for an ‘Ask Me Anything’ session for paying subscribers about the week that was for the next hour, including:
PM Chris Hipkins announcement of the rest of a policy bonfire to save a combined $1.7 billion, but which blew up the Emissions Trading Scheme, upset the Greens and was overshadowed somewhat by Stuart Nash’s resignation;
the failure of Silicon Valley Bank and the collapse in the share price of Credit Suisse has renewed nerves about the Global Financial System, and shows the fast rate hikes of the last year may not be sustainable if they endanger bank stability;
a new report showed the new RMA could generate new carbon liabilities of up to $16 billion because of consenting delays; and,
Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown’s budget cuts came under fire, justifiably, from those arguing the so-called ‘fiscal hole’ and debt crisis is not a hole or a crisis..
That’s it. Fill yer’ boots. I’m here for the full hour. Jump into the comments to ask questions.
Cheers
Bernard
Be interested in your thoughts about the implications and interests at okay from industry/emitters in the ETS auction fail. Obviously Govt’s signals were a huge part but your chat with Wood the other day focussed only on govt’s role so interested in your take of other parties roles.
On the climate policy bonfire - no one seems to be making a deal of the fact this is CERF money that is now going to be used for general expenditure. Isn’t CERF funding supposed to be ring fenced? What justification could there be for redistributing money that has been taken from polluters for the purpose of mitigating those emissions and using to pay benefits?
